A Song River
凤凰山下·词
96 mins | Documenary | 2024
Suffering from ennui and a volatile relationship with his mother, director Zhu Xin develops an obsession with ‘ci’, a form of ancient poetry that was written to be sung with music. Together with Hong Kong-born lyricist and illustrator Siu Hak, Zhu traces the roots of a Song Dynasty ‘ci’, searching for its original Cantonese pronunciation and even reenacting how the poet wrote it. A fascinating act of cultural anthropology and a probe into the nature of creativity, A Song River is a fascinating journey through time, memories, and language.
